It’s that time of year again to celebrate America’s Birthday and like most Americans, you are probably celebrating this Independence Day outdoors. We know you don’t want to share your festivities with pests like ants, flies, mosquitoes and wasps, so HillTex Pest Control has put together some tips to help make your July 4th a little more enjoyable!

Keep food & beverages sealed. It wouldn’t be the Fourth of July without BBQ, watermelon, chips and other sweets served at your party. Unfortunately, people aren’t the only ones who love these foods. Insects such as ants and flies love snacking on these foods too. To prevent food-borne illnesses, we recommend placing food in trays or dishes and then wrapping them in plastic or aluminium foil. It’s also recommended to keep beverage bottles sealed when not in use. Or, you can serve food inside and have your guests eat outside!
Remove standing water To avoid pesky mosquito bites, make sure standing water is removed from the outdoor eating and socializing areas. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, therefore by removing these breeding areas, you greatly reduce the mosquito population in your yard. This includes emptying birdbaths, kiddie pools and flower pots.
Move potted plants away from the BBQ area. Your pretty flowers may attract bugs that bother your guests and food.
Check for ticks. Whether you’re in your backyard or visiting the springs, ticks are hiding in the grass and shrubs. Check yourself and family members.
Mow your lawn. Mow your lawn the day before your big event & make sure to keep trash cans far away so bugs don’t pester your guests.
Plant herbs like lavender, peppermint or basil. If you’re looking for a natural way to keep pests away, try planting these herbs in your garden!*Lavender – mosquitoes, moths and fleas and flies.*Basil – flies, mosquitoes.*Peppermint – mosquitoes, mice, spiders, flies, ants
