Oak Trees are Dropping More than Pollen...WORMS are everywhere!

Nathan Schlessiger

If your vehicle is covered in yellow pollen, it's probably covered in little green worms too!

CANKERWORMS - WHAT ARE THEY?

Cankerworms, also known as “inchworms,” are spring caterpillars which are light green to brown in color. They’re different from normal caterpillars in that they have fewer legs than most, with only two feet on their abdomens, resulting in their odd form of movement.

Cankerworms are found in oak trees and will make those silk strands that fall out of the trees. Even if you’re not worried about the health of your trees, you will likely find the cankerworms a nuisance when they drop out of those trees onto your picnic table or onto the doors and windows of your home. Cankerworms hatch just when the trees are starting to bud in the spring.

They eventually form a cocoon and then turn into moths. The moths go around and plant eggs on the trees that will hatch into worms again next year.

The good news is, unlike other caterpillars, cankerworms have a seven-year cycle, which means that they are abundant for several years (four years on average), then are scarce for up to 18 years, which is why you might not have seen many of this type of caterpillar recently.
